Distances from Himara 2026: Drive Times to Every Destination

"How far is it from Himara to X?" is the question every trip plan starts with — and the answer changes depending on whether you ask Google Maps, your hotel, or the rental clerk. This page is the single reference: the road distance and realistic drive time from Himara to every destination travelers actually drive to, each row linked to the full route guide with bus times, taxi fares, and timing tips. Use it to decide what's a quick hop, what's a day trip, and what really wants an overnight.

Every figure below comes from our own route guides — the ones we drove and timed in 2026 — not from an empty-road map estimate. For the full matrix with August-peak penalties and bus-vs-taxi-vs-rental comparisons, see Albanian Riviera drive times.

Distances & Drive Times from Himara

All distances are road distance (not straight-line), and drive times are realistic moving time by car. Add 15-45 minutes on long routes for coffee, photos, and the Llogara climb. Buses and furgons run slower; see each linked guide for schedules and fares.

Notes on the Numbers

A few things the table can't show in a single cell:

  • It's almost all the SH8. Every coastal destination — Porto Palermo, Borsh, Dhermi, Jale, Gjipe, Saranda — sits on the SH8, the cliff-top road that runs the length of the Albanian Riviera. It's spectacular and slow: figure a realistic 50-60 km/h average once you account for switchbacks, scooters, and the occasional goat. The "drive time" your map app shows assumes a speed you will not safely hold.
  • Llogara: tunnel vs pass. Anything north of Himara toward Vlora, Tirana, or Berat used to mean climbing the 1,027 m Llogara Pass. The new Llogara Tunnel cuts roughly 35-45 minutes off that leg, which is why the Vlora figure is 1h 30m via the tunnel versus over 2 hours on the pass. The tunnel has occasional weather and maintenance closures, so check the Llogara Tunnel guide before relying on it for a flight connection.
  • Vlora Airport is closer than Vlora city. The new Vlora International Airport (VLO) sits near Akerni, north of the city, so you reach it without driving through Vlora's traffic — that's why it lands at 73 km and 1-1.5 hours.
  • The ferry to Corfu doesn't leave from Himara. There's no direct Himara-Corfu boat. The Corfu ferry runs from Saranda's port, so a Corfu day adds the 53 km Himara-Saranda leg on top of the crossing — see the Saranda day trip guide for the connection.

Which of These Work as Day Trips?

Distance decides whether a destination is a relaxed outing or a marathon:

  • Half-day, barely a trip: Porto Palermo, Jale, Gjipe, Borsh, Dhermi, and Llogara are all under 30 minutes to 40 minutes each way. You can leave after breakfast and be back for a swim.
  • Comfortable full-day trips: Saranda (53 km), Ksamil (70 km), Blue Eye (78 km), and Butrint (90-100 km) are all doable as a single day if you leave by 8 AM — especially to beat the Saranda ring-road congestion in summer. Gjirokaster (100 km, 2-3 hours) is workable but tight: expect roughly 4-5 hours on the road for the round trip.
  • Better as an overnight: Berat is the longest realistic day trip at 150 km and 3-3.5 hours each way — that's 6-7 hours of driving for about 5 hours on the ground. It deserves the overnight.

FAQ

How far is Saranda from Himara?

Saranda is about 53 km south of Himara along the SH8 coastal road, and the drive takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Buses cover the same route a little slower. Full details in the Saranda day trip guide.

How long is the drive from Tirana to Himara?

The drive between Himara and Tirana Airport (TIA) is about 230 km and takes 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours by car off-peak, longer in summer-afternoon traffic or after dark. The route uses the Tirana-Vlora motorway and the Llogara Tunnel. Public buses take 6-8 hours with a change in Tirana. See the Himara to Tirana Airport guide.

How far is Himara from Vlora Airport?

Vlora International Airport (VLO) is about 73 km from Himara, a 1 to 1.5 hour drive depending on whether you take the Llogara Tunnel or the pass. Because the airport sits north of Vlora near Akerni, you don't have to drive through the city to reach it. See the Himara to Vlora Airport guide.

Can you day-trip to Gjirokaster from Himara?

Yes, but it's a tight day. Gjirokaster is about 100 km inland via Saranda and the Drino valley, a 2 to 3 hour drive each way, which means roughly 4-5 hours on the road for a same-day return. Leave early and you'll still get a full afternoon in the old town. See the Himara to Gjirokaster transport guide for bus, taxi, and rental options.
