Himara's cooking leans on the Ionian Sea and the area's Greek heritage: grilled and fried fresh fish and seafood, Greek-influenced plates like souvlaki, gyros and grilled meats, and Albanian and Mediterranean staples. Along the coast you'll also find very good wood-fired and Neapolitan pizza and Italian pasta. Most menus are built around whatever was landed that morning.
Bring cash. Albania runs largely on the lek (about 100 ALL to €1), and many smaller tavernas, beach spots and cafes are cash-only or cash-preferred, even though larger and higher-end places increasingly take cards. There are ATMs in Himara town, but carry enough lek for a meal — card machines can drop offline when the signal does.
It's still good value by Western-European standards. A casual taverna or pizza meal runs roughly €8–15 per person, while a fresh-fish dinner at a seafront restaurant is more — fish is usually priced by the kilo, so confirm the weight and price before ordering. Budget travellers get by on about €30–50 a day all in; coffee and a pastry are a couple of euros.
For most casual tavernas you can just walk in. In July and August the popular seafront and higher-rated spots fill at peak dinner times, so it's worth reserving a day ahead or arriving early, before about 8pm. Outside high season, booking is rarely necessary.
The densest cluster is along Himara's town promenade and the Spile waterfront, where seafront tavernas, pizzerias and cafes sit side by side. There are also well-rated spots up in the old town and spread south toward Qeparo along the SH8 coast road. Our guide lists each with its verified rating so you can compare rather than rely on a single pick.
