Himara Activities FAQs

What are the best things to do in Himara?

The coast is the main draw: boat tours to sea caves and hidden coves, swimming and snorkelling at clear-water beaches, and sunset cruises. On land there's hiking — the Gjipe Canyon trail and Llogara National Park — tandem paragliding off the Llogara heights, and historic sights like Himara Castle and Porto Palermo. Most visitors mix a couple of beach-and-boat days with one hike or castle.

What day trips can you take from Himara?

All within reach to the south: Butrint, the UNESCO-listed ancient city near Saranda; the Blue Eye, a vivid natural spring; and Gjirokastër, the UNESCO Ottoman stone town inland. Closer by, Porto Palermo's castle and Borsh are easy half-days down the SH8 coast road.

Is there good hiking near Himara?

Yes. The Gjipe Canyon trail down to the beach and the trails in Llogara National Park are the standouts, and there's a roughly two-hour walk inland to Athali Monastery from Spile Beach. Several coastal village paths link the old hill villages to their beaches. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking.

Can you go paragliding or do water sports?

There's tandem paragliding from the Llogara heights above the coast — one of the higher launches on the Riviera — plus sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling at spots like Filikuri. Beach bases and boat operators along the front rent gear and run trips in season.

Do you need to book activities in advance?

In July and August it's worth booking boat tours, paragliding and organised day trips a day or more ahead, as popular morning slots fill first. Hikes, beach swims and self-guided sightseeing need no booking. Outside peak season you can usually arrange most things on shorter notice.
