Saranda Airport 2026: Closest Airports to Saranda & Ksamil

People search for "Saranda airport" all the time, and there isn't one. Saranda has no airport, and neither does Ksamil, 14 km down the coast. The nearest runways are on a Greek island, or more than four hours' drive north.

That leaves four names on the map around it. Two of them work, one works for almost nobody, and one has a finished terminal and no flights. Which of the two good ones is right depends on the month you are travelling more than on the distance.

The short reading: Corfu in season, Tirana the rest of the year. The detail below is what decides the edge cases.

Corfu: the closest airport, in another country

Corfu Airport is the nearest one to both Saranda and Ksamil by a wide margin. You can see the island from Saranda's seafront. The complication is that it is in Greece, so your arrival involves a bus, a port, a passport check out of the Schengen area and a ferry.

Airport to port. City bus 15 runs Airport – San Rocco – Port. The operator's timetable valid from 28 September 2026 has through buses to the port leaving the airport every 20 to 30 minutes between 07:30 and 21:30, taking about 20 minutes. A few early and late runs stop at San Rocco square instead, a 15-minute walk from the port. A taxi does it in 10 to 15 minutes.

The ferry. Fast boats cross to Saranda in about 30 minutes, and the slower ferry takes around an hour. Fares run roughly €19–25 one way, up to about €30 on a peak-season fast boat, with three operators in summer. Frequency is the thing to check, because it collapses after October. Ionian Seaways' own timetable for late 2026 shows:

Period Sailings from Corfu per day
1–15 October 12
16–31 October 8
1–10 November 4
11 November–31 December 1 (09:00)

So in summer you land, ride the bus and take the next boat. From mid-November a flight that arrives after breakfast means a night in Corfu Town. Times on the timetable are local, and Greece is one hour ahead of Albania.

From landing to Saranda, allow about three hours: 20 minutes on the bus, an hour's margin at the port for tickets and passport control, half an hour at sea, and whatever you wait for the sailing. The ferry terminal in Saranda is on the town's waterfront. Our Corfu to Albania ferry guide covers the operators and the port, and the Saranda ferry terminal guide covers the arrival end.

Choose Corfu if you are travelling between May and October, your trip is Saranda, Ksamil and the Riviera rather than all of Albania, and your home airport has a seasonal Corfu route.

Tirana: the one that always works

Tirana International is about 250 km from Saranda, on the far side of the capital from the road south. It runs all year with more than 20 airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air, which is why it often wins on fares and is the only option on most dates outside summer.

You pay for that in hours. From our Tirana Airport to Saranda guide:

Option Cost Door to door
Bookable airport-to-Saranda bus about €20 about 5h50, around five departures a day
Airport bus, city terminal, coach about €20 6–8 hours with two changes
Private transfer €150–220 per car 4–4.5 hours
Rental car €25–40 a day plus fuel 4–4.5 hours

A late-evening arrival is the case where Tirana hurts. The last through bus leaves around 21:00, and after that it is a private transfer or a night in the city. With a car, the drive south is also the start of the trip. Gjirokaster and the Blue Eye are both on the way.

Choose Tirana if you are travelling from November to April, your flight options into Corfu are poor or expensive, or you are combining the south with Berat, Gjirokaster or the capital.

Vlora: a terminal without flights

Vlora International Airport is the one that would change this whole comparison, and it has not opened to passengers. Its first certification flight landed in May 2025. The 2026 summer programme was then cancelled after certification delays, and as of early October 2026 there is no scheduled service and no announced start date.

If you find a page saying it opened in June 2026, it was written before the postponement. Our Vlora Airport guide has the background. Do not book around it.

Ioannina: closer than Tirana, and nearly useless

Ioannina's airport shows up as "second nearest" on distance calculators, which is true and unhelpful. Its only regular scheduled route is Aegean's service to Athens; the rest is seasonal charters from Scandinavia. From there you still have to cross the land border at Kakavia, and we could not verify any public transport that links the airport to Saranda.

It makes sense in one situation. You are already in Athens, you would rather fly than take the long-distance bus, and you are renting a car that is cleared for Albania. Everyone else should skip it. If you do drive, our Albania–Greece border crossings guide covers which crossing to use.

Which airport should you book?

Your trip Book
June–September, beaches only, from the UK or northern Europe Corfu
October or May, flexible Corfu if the ferry times fit your flight, otherwise Tirana
November–April Tirana
Landing after about 20:00 Tirana with a pre-booked transfer. Corfu works only while a late boat runs, such as the 22:30 in the early-October timetable. Otherwise it means a night in Corfu Town
Road trip through Albania Tirana, with a rental car
Only staying in Ksamil Corfu in season. The last leg from Saranda is a local bus for about 100 lek

Getting on to Ksamil

Ksamil adds 14 km to whichever route you choose. From Saranda the local bus runs about every half hour in summer and roughly hourly off-season, takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs about 100 lek in cash. Details are in the Saranda to Ksamil bus guide. Coming straight from Tirana, the Tirana to Ksamil guide explains why you will almost always change in Saranda.

For international travelers

US travelers: neither Corfu nor Tirana has direct US flights, so you connect through a European hub either way. Tirana has the wider choice of connections. Distances: Tirana to Saranda is about 155 miles by road; Saranda to Ksamil about 9 miles.

UK travelers: this is the route where Corfu is worth pricing first. Check the seasonal Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and TUI services into Corfu before defaulting to Tirana, and remember that the day you land in Corfu counts against your 90 Schengen days even if you are on the ferry two hours later.

EU travelers: Ryanair and Wizz Air fly to Tirana year-round from many German cities and from Eindhoven, which makes it the default outside summer. In July and August compare a Corfu fare plus the ferry against the Tirana fare plus a five-hour transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Saranda have an airport?

No. Saranda has no airport, and neither does Ksamil. The nearest useful airports are Corfu in Greece, reached by a short ferry, and Tirana International, about 250 km north by road. Vlora's new airport, which would be closer than Tirana, had no scheduled passenger flights as of October 2026.

What is the closest airport to Ksamil?

Corfu International Airport. From the terminal you take city bus 15 or a taxi to Corfu's port, a ferry of about 30 minutes to Saranda, then a 20 to 30 minute local bus to Ksamil. The route works best from May to October, when the ferries run many times a day.

Is it better to fly to Corfu or Tirana for Saranda?

Corfu in summer, Tirana in winter. Corfu is much closer and the ferry is quick, but its flights are seasonal and the boats drop to one a day from mid-November. Tirana flies all year with more airlines and often lower fares, at the cost of a four to six hour road transfer.

How do I get from Corfu Airport to Saranda?

Take city bus 15 from the airport to the port, about 20 minutes, with through buses every 20 to 30 minutes from 07:30 to 21:30. Buy a ferry ticket at the New Port, clear Greek passport control and cross to Saranda in about 30 minutes on a fast boat. Allow about three hours in total.

Can I fly to Vlora instead?

Not yet. Vlora International Airport completed a certification flight in May 2025, but its 2026 flights were cancelled after certification delays and no scheduled passenger service was operating in October 2026. Until an airline is selling seats, plan around Corfu or Tirana.

The short version

There is no Saranda airport, so the real choice is between two others. Fly to Corfu when the ferries are frequent, roughly May to October, and you want the beach on the day you land. Fly to Tirana when it is winter, when you land late, or when Saranda and Ksamil are one stop on a longer trip through Albania.
