Saranda to Dhermi looks like the easiest hop on the Albanian Riviera. One road, one coast, about 70 km. Then you look up the buses out of Saranda, find most of them marked "Tirana", and discover that most of those never go near the sea. They leave town inland through Gjirokaster and the Tepelena valley, and Dhermi is not on that road.
Getting this leg right comes down to which bus you board, where it drops you, and what you do when the timetable you found online turns out to be one of two that disagree.
Saranda to Dhermi at a glance
| Option | Time | Cost | How often | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal bus | 1h40–2h40 | about €10 | ~3 a day on the published timetables | The operator and the booking site disagree on the midday time |
| Bus to Himara, then local leg | 2h30 or more with the change | ~€10 + €2–20 | 5 to 7 buses to Himara, depending on the month | You organise the last 16 km yourself |
| Taxi / private transfer | ~1h45 | roughly €60–90 per car | On demand | Agree the price before you get in |
| Rental car | 1h45–2h | Fuel only | Your schedule | Slow in August, and you will want to stop |
Distance is our own route data: 54 km from Saranda to Himara, then 16 km on to Dhermi village, all of it on the SH8.
The coastal bus, and how to avoid the inland one
Only buses that run the coast road pass Dhermi. Those are the coastal services to Tirana and to Vlora. The main Saranda–Tirana buses, the ones with the most departures, take the inland highway and are useless for this trip.
One operator publishes the coastal line on its own site. Olgeno Travel's Saranda–Tirana timetable, read on 2 October 2026, lists three departures with a Dhermi stop:
| Leaves Saranda | Himara | Dhermi | Drymades |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 07:00 | 07:40 | 07:45 |
| 13:00 | 15:00 | 15:40 | 15:45 |
| 18:00 | 19:00 | 19:50 | 19:55 |
The ticketing platform Gjirafa, checked the same week, also shows three direct buses a day at €10, but not the same three. It lists a 05:30 Transbus Saranda service arriving 07:30, a 13:30 Olgeno arriving 16:00 and an 18:00 Olgeno arriving 19:50.
The evening bus is the same in both. The morning pair may be two different buses, Transbus at 05:30 and Olgeno at 06:00. Only the midday time is a real conflict, 13:00 on the operator's page against 13:30 on the booking site. Treat it like this:
- Morning: be at the station by 05:30 if you need the first bus. If only the 06:00 runs, you have lost half an hour of sleep and nothing else.
- Midday: be there by 13:00.
- Evening: 18:00, arriving just before 20:00.
Neither source carries a date range, and nothing confirms these run in winter. Coastal services generally thin out in the off-season, so outside June to September ask at the station the day before. Before you pay, say "Dhërmi" to the driver and ask whether the bus goes by the coast. If the answer involves Gjirokaster, get off.
Change in Himara: more departures on the same road
Every bus from Saranda to Himara gets you most of the way, and there are more of them. Gjirafa listed seven a day when we checked in July 2026. On 2 October it listed five, at 05:30, 10:00, 11:30, 13:30 and 18:00. Our Himara to Saranda guide has the summer table and covers both directions.
From Himara the last 16 km takes 25 to 35 minutes. Our Himara to Dhermi guide puts a taxi at €15–20 and a seat on a passing bus or furgon at €2–3, if one comes. This is the better plan when the first coastal bus is too early and the midday one too late, or when you want lunch on Himara's seafront on the way up. It does not rescue a missed midday bus. After 13:30 the only bus to Himara is the 18:00, which goes on to Dhermi anyway.
Where the bus leaves you
The coach stops on the SH8, on the ridge above the coast. It does not go down to the water. "Dhermi" is three places. There is the old village on the hill, Dhermi beach, and Drymades next door, where the beach clubs are. From the roadside stop it is 2.5 to 3 km down to Drymades, 30 to 40 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride. Agree the fare first. The walk back up with a bag in August is another matter.
The Olgeno timetable lists Drymades as its own stop five minutes after Dhermi, so tell the driver which one you want. If you have not decided, Drymades vs Dhermi is the two-minute version, and the Dhermi travel guide covers where to stay.
Taxi and private transfer
We found no fixed tariff, and published figures are far apart. Our Dhermi guide carries 5,000–6,000 ALL for the run, about €50–60. A 2024 route guide puts it at €70–90, and the Gjirafa booking site says fares often exceed €60. Expect a quote somewhere in that range, possibly higher in peak season, and settle it before the car moves.
Private-transfer companies also sell this leg with sightseeing stops built in, such as Porto Palermo castle and Himara castle. The price rises with each stop you add, and it is the one version of this trip where you see the coast instead of the back of a seat. For two or more people with luggage it is a reasonable use of a travel day.
Driving it yourself
About 70 km and 1h45 to 2 hours without stops, on one road the whole way. The SH8 is paved and two-lane but it winds, climbs and drops repeatedly, and in July and August it is slow behind buses and campervans. Our drive-times table has realistic summer figures for each leg.
The stops are the reason to drive. Borsh has the longest beach on the coast, Porto Palermo has the castle on its peninsula, Himara is the place for lunch, and there is a viewpoint above Gjipe just before Dhermi. Leaving Saranda by 09:00 and arriving mid-afternoon is a better day than doing it in one go.
Past Dhermi the road climbs to the Llogara pass, or dives into the tunnel that now bypasses it. If you are continuing north to Vlora, that choice is the next decision.
Coming back: Dhermi to Saranda
Southbound, the same Olgeno line from Tirana passes Dhermi at 11:00, 14:00 and 19:00 on the operator's timetable, reaching Saranda at 13:30, 16:30 and 21:30.
All of them pick up on the SH8. Book the seat where you can and confirm the pick-up point, because nothing guarantees that a passing bus will stop for a wave. Be there 15 minutes early. On a day trip the workable pair is the first bus up and the 14:00 back, which gives you a little over six hours in Dhermi and about five of them on the beach.
If Dhermi is a day out from Saranda rather than your next base, a boat trip from Dhermi along the coast fits that window.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct bus from Saranda to Dhermi?
Yes, about three a day on the published timetables, all on the coastal route. The operator Olgeno lists departures at 06:00, 13:00 and 18:00, while the Gjirafa booking site shows 05:30, 13:30 and 18:00 at around €10. The more frequent Saranda–Tirana buses run inland through Gjirokaster and do not stop at Dhermi.
How long does it take to get from Saranda to Dhermi?
By car about 1h45 to 2 hours for roughly 70 km of coastal road. The bus takes between 1h40 and 2h40 depending on the departure, because the midday service is scheduled much slower than the early and evening ones. Add time in July and August, when the SH8 is busy.
How much is a taxi from Saranda to Dhermi?
Expect a quote of roughly €60 to €90 per car. Published figures vary: 5,000–6,000 ALL in our own Dhermi guide, €70–90 in a 2024 route guide. Agree the price before you set off. A transfer with sightseeing stops along the coast costs more.
Does the bus stop at Dhermi beach?
No. It stops on the SH8 main road above the coast. Drymades is 2.5 to 3 km downhill from there, 30 to 40 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride. The operator timetable lists Dhermi and Drymades as separate stops, five minutes apart.
Can I visit Dhermi as a day trip from Saranda?
Yes, by bus if you take the first departure and come back on the bus that passes Dhermi around 14:00, or the last one at about 19:00. With a car it is easy, and the drive itself, past Borsh, Porto Palermo and Himara, is half the point.
The short version
Saranda to Dhermi works by bus as long as you board a coastal one. There are roughly three a day, at about €10 and around two hours. Turn up for the earlier of the two published times, confirm "Dhermi, by the coast" with the driver, and expect to be dropped on the road above the beach. If the timing does not fit, ride any bus to Himara and cover the last 16 km from there.
