This page is the running update log for Himara — not a travel guide, not an opinion piece. Every section is dated. Anything older than 60 days is moved to the bottom under "Older Updates" and eventually archived. If you're trying to figure out whether the construction outside your booked hotel is real, whether the tunnel is open, when the next festival is, or which restaurant just closed without warning, this page answers in the format you can scan in 30 seconds. For the editorial "is it worth visiting" take that synthesizes all of this into a recommendation, see Albanian Riviera 2026: What's Actually Changed — that article is the opinion piece; this one is the dated facts.

What's New in Himara — 2026 Updates
Items below are listed newest first. Each entry has a date stamp and, where useful, a one-line "what this means for your trip."
2026-05-17 — Trends spike: "himara news" up 130% year-over-year
Google Trends shows "himara news" queries climbing 130% over the May 2025–May 2026 window. We're reading that as a mix of (a) repeat visitors checking whether the things they remembered are still here, (b) prospective visitors trying to validate forum threads from earlier seasons, and (c) the post-tunnel attention cycle. This page exists to serve that demand directly rather than scattering the updates across our seasonal monthly guides.
2026-05-14 — Article refresh wave (internal)
We refreshed the lgbtq-travel-albania guide and the gjipe-beach-parking guide for 2026 fees. If you're using either as a planning input, treat the May 2026 versions as current.
2026-05-12 — Llogara Tunnel toll status
Toll is being collected. Cash + card both accepted at the tunnel toll plaza on the Orikum side. Exact pricing and what to expect: Llogara Tunnel price guide 2026. The old SH8 Llogara Pass road remains free and open in parallel; the choice between them is now an "old road for views vs new tunnel for speed" decision — see Llogara Pass vs Tunnel.
2026-05-02 — Spile promenade construction finished
The lungomare-style pedestrian promenade works in Spile (the main town beach in Himara) wrapped. Full access restored. The dust-and-fencing complaints in summer-2025 forum threads no longer apply.
2026-04 — New hotel openings (verified for 2026 season)
Several Himara-area properties confirmed open for the 2026 season, including new and re-launched stock around the Spile waterfront and the Livadhi cluster. Where we have stayed or have primary-source contact, the property is listed in our hotels section. Properties we haven't visited are not listed.
2026 Festival Calendar — Confirmed
| Event | Dates | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Kala Festival (Dhërmi) | Early June 2026 | Confirmed — full Kala festival 2026 guide |
| Himara Music Festival (Spile) | Late summer 2026 | Confirmed — see music festival guide |
| Orthodox Easter | April 2026 (passed) | See Orthodox Easter Himara guide for 2027 planning |
What's Not Changing in 2026 (Despite Forum Rumors)
- "Himara is overtouristed now": No. The Albanian Riviera has more visitors than 5 years ago, but Himara specifically remains quieter than Ksamil, Saranda, or Dhërmi. See our overtourism breakdown for the actual numbers.
- "You can't get to Himara without a car now": No. The Tirana ↔ Saranda buses still stop in Himara; the Tirana to Himara routes work the same way they did in 2024.
- "All the good restaurants closed": No. Recurring forum noise — the named restaurants in our restaurants section are operating in 2026. A few we previously listed are seasonal; check the listing for current-season notes.
- "Cash only everywhere": Partly outdated. Most Himara restaurants and hotels accept card; smaller villages (Vuno, upper Qeparo) and some beach bars are still cash-preferred. Carry both. See Albania cash vs card 2026.
Construction in 2026 — What You'll Actually See
Honest 2026 status of the building-site situation around Himara:
- Spile waterfront: finished (May 2026). No active sites on the main beach strip.
- Himara-to-Saranda corridor (SH8): intermittent lane-reduction works on the southern stretch; no full closures planned for the summer season.
- Vlora-Orikum-Llogara corridor: the tunnel works are done; some access-road landscaping continues but doesn't affect through-traffic.
- Hotel construction (in town): scattered small-scale builds, especially up the hillside above Spile. Booking in the upper town in May–June, request a "no-construction-view" room; in July–August, builders pause for high season so it's a non-issue.
- Dhërmi side: more active building than Himara. If construction noise is a hard constraint, prefer Himara, Livadhi, or Qeparo over Dhërmi for 2026.
What's Open in Late May 2026
Specific to the time of writing. Refresh this section monthly.
- Beach clubs: ~70% open as of 2026-05-17. Full season operation by 2026-06-15.
- Hotels: all major hotels open; off-season-only closures (a small number of guesthouses) reopening through June.
- Restaurants: all year-round restaurants open. Seasonal-only spots (rooftop bars in particular) staggered opens through May.
- Tours: boat tours fully operational. Paragliding active. Diving operators open. Hiking guides taking bookings.
- Public transport: unchanged from winter schedule; summer schedules add ferry frequency from June.
When This Page Goes Stale
This page is the dated-update record. Each major section gets a date stamp. We refresh:
- Quick Status Board: monthly minimum, more often during high season
- "What's New" entries: as events happen; older entries archived to the bottom after 60 days
- Festival Calendar: at season open and after each event
If you're reading this more than 90 days after the date in the meta block at the top, treat the dated entries as historical and check the current situation editorial for the latest take.
Older Updates (Archived)
Entries from earlier in 2026 are pruned out of the main feed every quarter. For pre-2026 history of construction, closures, and openings, the historical record is the relevant monthly guide (April, May, etc.) — those documents are written for a specific month, so they preserve the seasonal context this rolling-updates page strips out.
FAQ
How often is this page updated?
Monthly minimum during high season (May-October), every 6-8 weeks off-season. The "Last full review" date at the top tells you the floor. Quick Status Board changes are pushed sooner when material (tunnel closures, sudden hotel changes, weather-related disruptions).
Is the Llogara Tunnel definitely open right now?
As of 2026-05-17, yes — reopened May 2025 after the November 2024–May 2025 finishing-works closure. For the latest day-of-travel confirmation, check Albanian highway authority feeds, or the Llogara Pass vs Tunnel guide for the always-open alternative.
Are there any beaches closed for construction or restoration in 2026?
No major Himara-area beach is closed. Spile promenade works finished May 2026. Gjipe access road remains unpaved but open — see Gjipe parking guide. Localized work happens beach-by-beach but rarely lasts more than a few weeks.
Are prices significantly higher than 2024?
Yes, modestly. Mid-range hotels are 10-20% above 2024 peak rates for 2026 high season. Restaurants are roughly flat to +5%. Boat tours are flat. For shoulder-season pricing comparison, see our monthly guides (September is the best shoulder month for value).
Does this page replace the "current situation" article?
No — they're complementary. This page is the dated facts board. The current situation editorial is the opinion piece that synthesizes these facts into a "should you go" recommendation. Read this for the what, read that for the so what.

If you've just been in Himara and something on this page is wrong — a hotel that's actually closed, a tunnel that's actually shut, a festival date that moved — the fastest fix is an email so we can update within 24 hours. Stale dated content is worse than no content for this page format.
