Berat's stacked white Ottoman houses climbing the hillside above the river

Berat

The town of a thousand windows

Berat is the other UNESCO Ottoman town in Albania: white houses with rows of windows stacked up both sides of a river gorge, under a castle that people still live inside. It sits between Tirana and the south, which makes it a stop rather than a detour on the way to the coast, and at about five euros from Tirana, the best-value journey in the country.
