Berat hotels split into two very different trips. One is a modern room on the boulevard with a lift, parking and a view of traffic. The other is a stone house in the old quarters, reached on foot up a cobbled lane, with the "thousand windows" outside your own. Both are in Berat, a few hundred metres apart, and the booking sites list them side by side as if they were the same thing.
They are not, and the difference is mostly about one question you should answer before looking at a single photo: are you arriving with a car and a suitcase, or with a backpack and a free evening?
The four places to stay in Berat
Distances below are straight-line distances from the foot of Mangalem, by the Lead Mosque, measured to each hotel's own Google Maps pin. Walking adds a little, and in the old quarters it adds a climb.
| Area | What it is | Walk to the old quarters | Good for | Hotels people book here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mangalem | The white-house quarter on the north bank, under the castle | You are in it | First visit, one or two nights, photographers | Hotel Mangalemi, Onufri, Bohem, Portik |
| Gorica | The quieter quarter on the south bank, across the footbridge | 300-700 m | Couples, the best view of Mangalem | GrandView, Tradita e Beratit, Hotel Demaj |
| Kala, inside the castle | A lived-in citadel at the top of the hill, with St Michael's Church on the cliff below | 700-800 m, all uphill | Atmosphere, sunset, no car | Hotel Klea, Vila Art Berat Castle, Kitarat |
| New town and boulevard | Modern streets east of the old quarters | 400-700 m, flat | Drivers, families, bigger rooms | Colombo, Plaza, Gega, Republika |
If you have one night, sleep in Mangalem or Gorica. If you are driving, sleep on the boulevard side and walk in: Mangalem's lanes are steep cobbled footpaths and Gorica's are not much better, so a car there is a liability. Inside the castle is the most memorable night and the worst for luggage.

Hotel Colombo is the one most people search for, and one of two Berat hotels Maps lists as five-star, with the small Vista Boutique Hotel. It is a big columned new-build in the new town with its own spa and wellness section, and it is the most expensive room in the table by a distance. Its 4.3 from 810 reviews is the lowest score among the big names, which on these numbers says more about expectations than about the building.

Hotel Mangalemi is the classic answer: a restored Ottoman house at the foot of Mangalem with a terrace restaurant, 4.7 from 556 reviews, at roughly half Colombo's price. Hotel Plaza (4.9 from 663) and Hotel Klea (4.9 from 597) have the best combination of score and volume in town; Plaza is the boulevard choice, Klea the castle-quarter choice.
Hostels and the cheapest rooms
Berat is cheap by any standard. Out of season Maps showed Berat Backpackers (4.5 from 202 reviews) at €24 a night and Baza Hostel (4.9 from 94) at €25; Maya Hostel (4.7 from 180) is the other hostel people search for by name, in Gorica. Small family guesthouses in Gorica and around the castle fill the gap between a hostel bed and a €40 hotel room, and many of them are only on Booking.com or Airbnb rather than Maps, so check the map above rather than a list.
Apartments, Airbnb and camping
Airbnb and Booking.com both list whole houses and apartments in Berat, in the old quarters as well as the new town, which suits families or a stay of three nights or more. The same caveat applies as for hotels: if the listing is in Mangalem, Gorica or the castle, you will carry your bags up a lane. Berat is well served for campervans. On Google Maps in October 2026, River Side Camping (4.9 from 707 reviews) on the river west of the old town, Camping "The Castle of Berat" (4.9 from 411) and Camping-Camperstop Berat (5.0 from 240) had the strongest scores. Read the newest reviews first, because small campsites change hands and opening months.
Parking in Berat
Drive to the hotel only if it is on the boulevard side or tells you in writing where its parking is. In Mangalem and Gorica you will be parking on the flat streets below and walking up. If you plan to drive up to the castle, the road to the gate is steep and narrow; most visitors walk it, and our Berat day trip guide explains how much time to allow.
How long to stay, and what comes next
One night lets you see the castle at sunset and Mangalem lit up from Gorica, which is the reason to sleep here rather than day-trip. Two nights is better if you add the wine villages or the Osum canyon. From Berat most people head south: the Berat to Saranda transport guide covers the coast run, and Berat or Gjirokastër helps if you only have time for one of the two towns. If you are coming from Tirana, the Tirana to Berat bus is around 500 lek.
Where to eat once you are there is in our Berat restaurants guide, and if Gjirokastër is next, see where to stay in Gjirokastër.
FAQ
Where is the best place to stay in Berat?
Mangalem for a first visit, because you sleep inside the view everyone comes for. Gorica is quieter and looks back at it across the river. If you are driving or travelling with children, the boulevard side is flatter, has parking, and is still a five to ten minute walk from the old quarters.
What is the best hotel in Berat?
On Google score and review volume together, Hotel Plaza (4.9 from 663 reviews) and Hotel Klea (4.9 from 597) lead in October 2026, with Hotel Mangalemi (4.7 from 556) the strongest choice inside Mangalem itself. Hotel Colombo is the best-known five-star but scores lower, at 4.3.
Is there a five-star hotel in Berat?
Hotel Colombo is the large five-star, on the new-town side about 650 m from Mangalem, from about €124 a night outside summer when we checked, with a lower guest score than several four-star hotels. Maps also lists the small Vista Boutique Hotel as five-star, at 5.0 from 159 reviews.
Can I park at hotels in Mangalem?
Usually not at the door. Mangalem's lanes are steep cobbled footpaths, so most guests park on the flat streets below and walk up with their bags. If parking matters, pick a hotel on the boulevard side, such as Plaza, Gega or Republika, and ask the hotel to confirm its parking in writing.
How many nights do you need in Berat?
One night is enough for the castle, Mangalem and Gorica, and it is worth staying for the evening light rather than day-tripping. Stay two if you want the wine country or the Osum canyon, or if you are arriving late from Tirana or the coast.
