Berat is the town people tack onto the start of an Albania trip because it is two hours from Tirana, and then wish they had given longer. The obvious things to do in Berat take a day. The rest, a winery on the edge of town, a canyon an hour south, an evening on the boulevard with what feels like the whole population, take another.
The trouble with most lists is that they treat Berat as a set of sights. It works better as a sequence: what to do in the cool of the morning, what to save for late afternoon, which day of the week closes what, and what is worth a car. Here is that sequence, with the prices and hours we could verify for 2026.

1. Walk Mangalem and cross to Gorica
The thousand windows belong to Mangalem, the old Muslim quarter climbing from the river to the castle. Walk its stepped lanes early, before the heat and the tour groups, then cross the seven-arch Gorica bridge to the quieter Christian quarter on the other bank and turn around. That view, Mangalem stacked under the castle walls, is the picture of Berat. Our Berat old town guide has the walking order and the mosques along the way.
2. Climb to Berat castle
The castle is a neighbourhood, not a ruin: people still live inside the walls among Byzantine churches, and the Cathedral of the Dormition of St Mary, from 1797, holds the Onufri National Iconographic Museum. Go up in the late afternoon and stay for sunset from the southern walls. The Berat castle guide covers the ticket confusion, the museum hours and the winter Monday closure.
3. The museums
Berat's two museums are run by the same centre and share winter hours. The Onufri museum in the castle has about 200 icons and liturgical pieces, including work by Onufri, the 16th-century painter of the famous red. The Ethnographic Museum, in an Ottoman house on the lane up from Mangalem, opened in 1979 and shows how a prosperous Berat family lived. Until 31 October 2026 they open daily, Onufri 09:00–19:00 and the Ethnographic 10:00–17:00. From 1 November to 30 April both open Tuesday to Saturday 09:00–16:00 and Sunday 09:00–14:00, and both close on Mondays.
4. The mosques and the tekke
The King Mosque, from the reign of Bayezid II (1481–1512), is the town's oldest. Beside it the Halveti tekke, rebuilt in 1782, has the richest interior in town. The Lead Mosque of 1555 stands on the boulevard and the Bachelors' Mosque of 1827 by the river, its outside walls painted with flowers and little houses. Dress modestly and avoid prayer times.

5. Join the evening walk
At dusk Berat comes out for the xhiro along Bulevardi Republika and the riverbank. It costs nothing, it is the best people-watching in Albania, and it is the thing a day trip from Tirana always misses.
6. Taste wine at a family winery
The hills around Berat are among Albania's main wine areas, and three family wineries take visitors.
| Winery | Where | Google rating (Sept–Oct 2026) | Tasting, per 2025–26 visitor reports | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Çobo | Ura Vajgurore, about 14 km north-west by road | 4.7 (599) | About €25 for four wines with cheese and olives; about €45 for the top wines | Call ahead |
| Nurellari | Fushë-Peshtan, about 10 km south-east | 4.9 (1,590) | About €15–25 with a food board | Book on its website; no walk-ins |
| Pupa | Fushë-Peshtan, just up the hill from Nurellari | 4.7 (401) | About 1,500 lek for three wines, raki and snacks | Walk-ins accepted |
| Alpeta | Roshnik, about 8 km east | 4.9 (1,732) | Agritourism with its own wine; ask when you book a meal | Book a table |
Çobo is the established name, a family winery built around the native Shesh i Zi and Shesh i Bardhë grapes, and the easiest to reach on the Tirana side of town. Nurellari and Pupa sit next to each other on the slope south-east of Berat, so a morning at one and an afternoon at the other works. All three have guest rooms if you would rather not drive back. Prices above come from reviews and guides, not from the wineries, so confirm when you book.
7. The Osumi canyon and Bogova waterfall
The Osumi canyon starts near Çorovodë, about 50 km south-east of Berat and roughly an hour's drive. It runs about 26 km between limestone walls, according to the canyon's visitor site. What you do there depends on the month. Operators run rafting from late winter into early June, while snowmelt keeps the river high, and from mid-June the water drops low enough for tubing, wading and river walks. The Bogova waterfall, about 36 km from Berat, is a short walk of 20 to 40 minutes from the road to a cold pool you can swim in on a hot day.

Furgons run between Berat and Çorovodë, but they do not reach the canyon viewpoints or the waterfall trailhead, so you need a car or a tour. Tours that combine the canyon and the waterfall are listed from about €25 to €55 per person.
Go Outdoors Berat is a rafting operator based in Çorovodë, at the canyon itself, with 4.9 from 111 Google reviews. Canyon and wine tours from Berat are also on GetYourGuide's Berat page. Closer to town, Atv 4x4 Quad Tours Berat runs quad-bike tours from Velabisht, on the edge of Berat, through the river and the olive hills, listed on TripAdvisor from about $75 per adult for groups of up to nine.
8. Take a free walking tour
Free Walking Tour Berat meets at the Gorica bridge and runs about two hours on tips. Its site gives 10:00 and 14:00 daily in October and November, more slots in summer, and no tours from December to February. Message them on WhatsApp the day before, since listings disagree on times.
More things to do in Berat
- Mount Tomorr. The mountain east of town rises to 2,416 m and is a national park. From 20 to 25 August, Bektashi pilgrims climb to the Abbas Ali shrine on the southern summit, with 22 August the main day. The rest of the year, reaching the top needs a 4x4 on a dirt road or a long hike, ideally with a guide.
- Shopping. The boulevard and the lanes below the castle sell lace, carved wood, honey and raki. Buy olive oil and wine at the wineries.
- Berat Green Half Marathon. A 21.1 km race with a 10 km option, held on the first Sunday of April and starting and finishing on Bulevardi Republika. The 2026 edition ran on 5 April, and the organisers list 4 April 2027 for the next one.
Is there a beach near Berat?
No. Berat is inland, on a river. Swimming in Berat means a hotel pool or a mountain pool: the Bogova waterfall pool and the Osum in the canyon in summer. The sea is about 100 km away at Vlorë, roughly an hour and a half by road, and the beaches we recommend are further south on the Riviera around Himara.
Pools in Berat. Family Time Berat is an outdoor pool complex about 5.5 km north of town on the Tirana road, rated 4.5 from 445 Google reviews and popular with local families on summer weekends. In town, Hotel Colombo near the river has a pool listed as Colombo Pool Berat; ask at the hotel whether non-guests can use it and what it costs, since its listing has only a handful of reviews. For a massage or a spa afternoon, the larger hotels are the place to ask.
Getting to Berat
| From | Distance by road | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tirana | 123 km | About 2 h by bus | 500–700 lek, roughly half-hourly until late afternoon; Tirana to Berat bus guide |
| Durrës | 91 km | About 1½–2 h | Buses and furgons |
| Vlorë | 102 km | About 2 h | Via Fier |
| Himarë | 164 km | 3–3½ h by car | Over Llogara; see Himara to Berat |
| Gjirokastër | 147 km | 2½–3 h by car | Few direct buses; see Berat or Gjirokastër |
| Saranda | 181 km | About 4 h by bus | About three direct buses a day, last around 13:15; Berat to Saranda |
| Ksamil | 191 km | About 4½ h | Change in Saranda |
Distances are by road from the routing engines; times are what we would plan on, not what the map promises. From Shkodër or Ohrid there is no sensible direct service, and you change in Tirana.
The bus terminal. Berat Bus Terminal (Terminali i Autobusave) is on the SH72 about 2 km north of the old town, not in the centre. City buses and taxis cover the gap in a few minutes; with luggage and a guesthouse up in Mangalem or the castle, take a taxi. Buses back to Tirana leave from here, and so do the southbound departures for Gjirokastër and Saranda, which go in the morning. Check times at the terminal the day before.
Driving and parking. The lanes of Mangalem, Gorica and the castle are mostly pedestrian. Park along the boulevard or in the paid car parks near the river, or ask your guesthouse; several have a few spaces. If you need a rental car, compare offers in Tirana, where the airport gives the widest choice.
Where is Berat? In central-south Albania, on the Osum river at the foot of Mount Tomorr, about 120 km south of Tirana and about 70 km north of Gjirokastër as the crow flies. It is the northernmost town this guide covers.
Where to eat in Berat
Berat eats well and cheaply. Expect grilled meat, tavë kosi (baked lamb with yoghurt), stuffed peppers and local cheese, with wine from the hills around town. These are the places people search for by name most often, with their Google rating and review count when we pulled them in October 2026.

For a long lunch outside town, the agritourism farms of Roshnik, about 8 km east, are the local favourite: Alpeta Agritourism & Winery (4.9, 1,732 reviews), Kodra e Gjelbër or Green Hill (4.9, 524) and Restorant Roshniku (4.8, 395), all cooking from their own produce. You need a car or a taxi.
Ratings move; treat them as a snapshot, not a ranking. Our pick for a first dinner is Lili if you can get a table, and Roshnik for a slow lunch on the second day. The full list, sorted by reviews, is in our guide to Berat restaurants.
Where to stay in Berat
Stay in the old town. Mangalem puts you two minutes from the boulevard and the restaurants; Gorica is quieter, with the classic view from the terrace; the castle quarter is the most atmospheric and the steepest walk home. Newer hotels on the edge of town are easier with a car.
A few names come up again and again. Berat Backpackers, a hostel in Gorica (4.5 from 202 Google reviews), is the obvious budget base. White House Hotel & Restaurant in Mangalem and Castle Park, 1.6 km south of the centre, are hotels with their own restaurants. Grand White City is a bigger hotel about 2 km north, near the bus terminal, easier for drivers than for walkers. For a night inside the castle walls, see our Berat castle guide; the wineries at Fushë-Peshtan and Roshnik also rent rooms. For hotels area by area, see where to stay in Berat.

Berat weather by month
We pulled 20 years of ERA5 climate reanalysis (2006–2025) for Berat through Open-Meteo. The model smooths extremes, so treat these as typical values, not records.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 12°C | 3°C | 102 mm | 11 |
| February | 14°C | 4°C | 83 mm | 10 |
| March | 16°C | 6°C | 116 mm | 12 |
| April | 20°C | 10°C | 88 mm | 12 |
| May | 24°C | 14°C | 95 mm | 13 |
| June | 29°C | 18°C | 64 mm | 9 |
| July | 33°C | 21°C | 29 mm | 5 |

| November | 18°C | 9°C | 118 mm | 11 |
| December | 13°C | 5°C | 102 mm | 10 |
Rainy days are days with at least 1 mm. July and August are hot in a town of stone steps with little shade, so do the climbing early or late. May, June and late September are the sweet spot; October is still mild. Our Berat weather by month guide goes month by month, with what each one means for the castle climb and the canyon.
Frequently asked questions
What is Berat best known for?
Berat is known as the city of a thousand windows, for the white Ottoman houses of Mangalem stacked up the slope under the castle. It also has one of the few castles in Europe that people still live in, the Onufri icon museum, and a wine tradition. UNESCO added it to Gjirokastër's World Heritage listing in 2008.
How many days do you need in Berat?
One full day covers the old town, the castle, the Onufri museum and the evening walk. Stay a second day for a winery tasting or the Osumi canyon and Bogova waterfall, which need a car or a tour. A day trip from Tirana works, but you miss the evening, which is the best part.
Is Berat worth visiting?
Yes. It is one of the two UNESCO towns in Albania, two hours from Tirana, and the easiest to fit into the start or end of a trip. The castle quarter, the views between Mangalem and Gorica, and the evening on the boulevard make it worth at least a night.
Can you visit Berat as a day trip?
From Tirana, yes: buses take about two hours each way and leave roughly every half hour until late afternoon. From the Riviera it is a long day, about 164 km and three hours each way from Himarë. In both cases staying the night is better, because the old town is at its best in the evening.
What is the best time to visit Berat?
May, June, September and October. July and August average about 33°C at midday on our climate data, and Berat is all stone steps. Winter is mild but wet, and the museums close on Mondays from November to April. Rafting in the Osumi canyon needs spring water levels.
The bottom line
Do Mangalem early, the museums at midday, the castle late, and the boulevard at dusk. Then give Berat a second day for a winery or the canyon if you can. If you are choosing between Berat and Gjirokastër, read Berat or Gjirokastër first, and for tours, GetYourGuide's Berat page lists guided castle walks, wine tours and canyon trips.
