Ksamil vs Dhermi: Which Albanian Beach Town to Pick

These are the two beach towns most people end up choosing between on an Albanian coast trip, and they are far less alike than the photographs suggest. They sit about 130 km apart at opposite ends of the southern coast, they attract different crowds, and they are good at almost entirely different things.

The short version: Ksamil has the better beaches, Dhermi has the better setting and the nightlife. If you want white sand and shallow turquoise water, go south. If you want mountains dropping into the sea and a party at the end of it, go north. Here is the detail.

Beaches: Ksamil wins, clearly

There is no real argument here. Ksamil has the best sand in Albania. It is soft, white, genuinely sandy rather than fine shingle, and the bays shelve gently into shallow turquoise water. Add the small offshore islets a 100-metre swim away and you have the postcard the whole country is marketed on.

Dhermi's beaches are pebble and shingle, which is the Riviera norm. The water is arguably clearer and it gets deep faster, which suits swimmers and suits families less. What Dhermi has instead is scale and setting: long beaches with the Ceraunian mountains rising steeply behind them, which is a genuinely dramatic thing that Ksamil, low and flat, cannot offer.

If the beach itself is the priority: Ksamil. If you want to look at something while lying on one: Dhermi.

Crowds: both busy, differently

Ksamil in July and August is the most crowded beach in Albania. Central bays fill by around 09:00, buses from Saranda run full by mid-morning, and the village is small, so there is nowhere for the pressure to go. The mid-August Ferragosto fortnight is the annual peak.

Dhermi is busy too, but the beaches are longer and the coastline more spread out, so the density feels lower even when the numbers are similar. The exception is festival weeks, Kala in early June turns Dhermi upside down and books out the whole coast for months in advance.

Neither is quiet in peak season. Both are transformed in September, which is the honest recommendation for either.

Nightlife: Dhermi, no contest

Dhermi and neighbouring Drymades are the Albanian Riviera's nightlife centre, beach clubs, DJ programming through the summer, and the festival scene that draws people from across the Balkans and beyond. Our Dhermi nightlife guide and Himara vs Dhermi nightlife comparison cover it properly.

Ksamil has beach bars and some music, and it is fundamentally a family and day-tripper beach rather than a party one. For an evening with more going on, people take the 100-lek bus to Saranda.

Want to go out: Dhermi. Want to sleep: Ksamil.

What's nearby

This is where Ksamil pulls back ahead, and it is underrated in the comparison.

Ksamil sits about 4 km from Butrint, one of the most substantial ancient sites in the Mediterranean, and 14 km from Saranda with its port, ferries to Corfu, and onward buses. The Blue Eye and Gjirokastër are within a day. See day trips from Ksamil.

Dhermi sits on the Riviera coastal road with the Llogara Pass above it, Gjipe and the hidden coves nearby, and Himara twenty-five minutes south. The attractions are scenery and beaches rather than sites.

For a trip with sightseeing in it, Ksamil's position is better. For a trip that is purely coast and mountains, Dhermi's is.

Getting there

Ksamil, reached via Saranda, which has good bus links from Tirana (about 4h15-4h45 to Saranda, then 100 lek and 15-20 minutes onward). Also the closest beach town to the Greek border and the Corfu ferry.

Dhermi, on the Riviera coastal road, about 3-4 hours from Tirana over or through the Llogara Pass, and close to Vlora airport.

Coming from Corfu or Greece, Ksamil is far easier. Coming from Tirana or the north, Dhermi is closer.

Prices

Both sit at the expensive end of the Albanian coast in peak season.

Ksamil sunbeds run roughly 1,500-3,000 lek for two loungers and an umbrella, see the sunbed price guide, and central doubles around €100-150 a night in peak. Dhermi's range is wider, with genuinely upmarket beach clubs at one end and simpler guesthouses at the other, but peak-season beach-club prices there are comparable or higher.

Neither is the budget option. For that, look at Himara or the beaches south of it.

Who should pick which

Choose Ksamil if: you want the best sand in Albania; you are travelling with young children and want shallow, calm water; you want Butrint and the far south in reach; you are arriving from Corfu or Greece; you want a beach day rather than a night out.

Choose Dhermi if: you want mountains behind the beach; you want nightlife, beach clubs or a festival; you prefer pebble beaches with clearer, deeper water; you are coming from Tirana or the north and don't want a five-hour transfer; you have a car and want the Riviera road.

Choose neither if you want quiet, in peak season, both are busy. Himara and the smaller coves between the two are the quieter middle ground.

Can you do both?

Yes, and on a trip of a week or more it is a reasonable plan. They are different enough to justify it. The journey between them is roughly 2h15-3h via Saranda, and there is no reliable direct service, so budget most of a travel day. See Ksamil to Himara transport for the middle leg.

The efficient version: north to south, Tirana → Dhermi → Himara → Saranda/Ksamil → out via Corfu or the Greek border, so you never double back. Our south Albania itinerary sequences it.

FAQ

Is Ksamil or Dhermi better?

Ksamil has the better beaches, white sand, shallow, calm, and better access to Butrint and the far south. Dhermi has the better setting, with mountains behind the beach, and far better nightlife. Pick Ksamil for beach days and families, Dhermi for scenery and going out.

Which has better beaches, Ksamil or Dhermi?

Ksamil, clearly. It has the best sand in Albania: soft, white and shallow, with small islets a short swim offshore. Dhermi's beaches are pebble and shingle with deeper, arguably clearer water and a far more dramatic mountain backdrop.

Which is better for families, Ksamil or Dhermi?

Ksamil. The shallow, calm, sandy bays suit young children far better than Dhermi's pebble beaches and deeper water. Ksamil also has Butrint nearby for non-beach days, and Saranda 15 minutes away for pharmacies and supermarkets.

Which is better for nightlife?

Dhermi, by a wide margin. Dhermi and Drymades are the Albanian Riviera's nightlife centre, with beach clubs, summer DJ programming and the festival scene. Ksamil is primarily a family and day-tripper beach; for an evening out, people take the bus to Saranda.

How far is Ksamil from Dhermi?

Roughly 130 km along the coast, about 2h15-3h by road via Saranda, with no reliable direct service. Doing both on one trip works well on a week or more, ideally travelling north to south so you don't double back.

The bottom line

Ksamil for the sand, Dhermi for the setting. If you are bringing children or you came to Albania for that turquoise-and-white-sand photograph, go south. If you want mountains dropping into the sea and somewhere to go at midnight, go north. On a longer trip, do both, north to south, and let Himara be the quieter week in the middle.
