The bus from Tirana to Saranda (and back) is the cheapest way to cover the 255 km between the capital and the south coast, and the timetable is the easy part. The single thing that derails it is the terminal. Buses south don't leave from anywhere near Skanderbeg Square, they go from the South & North Bus Terminal, a 25-minute ride northwest of the centre, and travellers who only find that out on the morning of travel routinely watch their bus leave without them. Get the terminal right and the rest of this route is easy and cheap. Get it wrong and you're buying a last-minute transfer. For the wider picture, compare every south Albania bus route side by side.
Bus Tirana to Saranda: 2026 timetable
There are 8 to 10 departures a day. Tisa Travel runs the inland route through Fier, Tepelenë and Gjirokastër; Olgeno Travel & Tours runs two slower coastal buses down the Riviera; Transbus Saranda adds an afternoon slot. The times below are the October 2026 listing on Gjirafa Travel plus the 05:30 that local timetables carry. Treat them as a planning reference and reconfirm the day before, because Albanian intercity schedules shift with season and demand.

Saranda bus station: where the buses stop
Since early July 2026 Saranda has a real bus terminal. Intercity buses to and from Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Gjirokastër and Berat use the new Saranda bus terminal (Terminali i Autobusave) at Qafë Gjashtë, on Rruga Skënderbeu at the eastern entrance to town, about 2.2 km by road from the port and the centre. The municipal council approved its opening on 30 June 2026, and Saranda Web's terminal guide (checked 9 October 2026) lists it as the departure point for all the intercity routes. Before that, coaches stopped in the street on Rruga Flamurit by the synagogue ruins; older guides and some booking listings still say so.
Tickets are sold online (Gjirafa, Albus) and, according to the published schedules, still at the old ticket office on Rruga Onhezmi above the synagogue ruins in the centre. A city bus to the terminal leaves from near the "9 Tetori" school by the port, but local reporting in August 2026 found no posted timetable and waits of up to an hour, so a taxi is the practical way to make a departure.
The city bus to Ksamil and Butrint is a separate stop. It starts by the ferry terminal on Rruga Jonianet and picks up again on Rruga Skënderbeu in the centre; the Saranda to Ksamil bus guide has its times.

| Bus route, South & North terminal to Saranda | ~262 km |

The Terminal Trap (Read This First)
The southbound buses use the South & North Albania Bus Terminal (Terminali i Autobusëve të Jugut dhe Veriut), out near the Casa Italia Mega Outlet in the Mëzez/Kamëz area, roughly 25 minutes northwest of Skanderbeg Square and not walkable from the centre.
Two ways to reach it from central Tirana:
| From city centre | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| City bus, "Unaza/Institut–Kamëz" white municipal bus from near Ded Gjo Luli St; ask for "Terminali i Autobusëve të Jugut dhe Veriut" | 40 lek | ~25–35 min |
| Taxi / ride-hail (Bolt works in Tirana) | ~1,200–1,800 lek (12–15 €) | ~20 min |
Build in a margin: aim to be at the terminal 30–45 minutes early in summer. The buses fill, and a missed 09:45 means waiting until 12:30.
Fare & Payment
The standard one-way fare is about 1,500 lek (~15 €), paid in cash to the driver or the terminal kiosk (some riders report 1,600 to 1,700 lek in peak season). If you pre-book a seat online through Gjirafa, the price is 17 € with the booking fee, worth it only on peak July–August weekends when buses sell out.
- Carry lek, not euros, euro acceptance is inconsistent and the change rate is poor.
- There's no reserved seating on most runs; pre-booking holds a seat but you still board first-come for position.
- Keep small notes; drivers rarely break a 5,000-lek note cleanly.
Which Departure Should You Take?
- Onward Corfu ferry the same day? Only the 05:30 gives a safe buffer, the last summer ferry to Corfu leaves Saranda in the early evening, and you do not want to bet it on a 14:00 arrival. See the Saranda to Corfu ferry guide for sailing times.
- Just getting to the coast? The 07:30 or 08:30 land you in Saranda with the afternoon still ahead.
- Avoid the 22:00 overnight unless you have a booked bed waiting, a 03:00 arrival into a quiet Saranda is no fun with luggage.
A long bus day runs on your phone for tickets, maps and the live route, grab a Saily Albania eSIM before you fly in so you're not hunting for a SIM kiosk on arrival.
Onward From Saranda
Most people on this bus aren't stopping in Saranda, they're heading further. The handoffs:
| Onward leg | How | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Saranda → Ksamil | Municipal bus 150–200 lek, roughly hourly | Saranda–Ksamil bus guide |
| Saranda → Himara | Coastal bus / furgon, ~2h | Himara–Saranda transport |
| Saranda → Corfu | Passenger ferry, 30–90 min | Corfu ferry guide |
If you're continuing straight to Ksamil, the dedicated Tirana to Ksamil bus guide covers that transfer end to end.

Once you're settled, Saranda is the launch point for Butrint, Ksamil and Blue Eye day trips if you'd rather have the logistics handled.
Bus vs Other Options
| Mode | Typical cost (1 pax) | Time | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus | ~1,500 lek (15 €) | ~4.5–5h | Budget travel, flexible schedule |
| Private transfer / taxi | ~120–190 € per car | ~4–4.5h | Hard deadline, group of 3–4 splitting |
| Bus from Durrës | ~18–22 € booked | ~5h, one change | Coming from the coast north of Tirana |
| Train | Not possible | n/a | No passenger line reaches Saranda |
| Fly | Not possible | n/a | There's no airport in Saranda; nearest are Tirana and Corfu |
For solo and budget travellers with any schedule slack, the bus is the obvious value play. The only times it isn't: a tight same-day Corfu ferry, or a family with heavy bags who'll happily pay to skip the terminal logistics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the Tirana to Saranda bus leave from?
From the South & North Bus Terminal near the Casa Italia outlet, about 25 minutes northwest of central Tirana, not from the city centre. Reach it by the 40-lek municipal bus toward Kamëz, or a 12–15 € taxi. Arrive 30–45 minutes early in summer.
How much is the Tirana to Saranda bus?
About 1,500 lek (roughly 15 €) one way, paid in cash to the driver. Pre-booking a seat online via Gjirafa costs around 17 € including the booking fee, which is mainly worth it on busy July and August weekends when buses sell out.
How long does the bus take?
The inland Tisa Travel buses take about 4.5 to 5 hours for the ~262 km run; Olgeno's coastal buses take around 6.5 hours. In peak summer traffic, allow more. Build a generous buffer if you have an onward ferry or transfer.
How far is Saranda from Tirana?
About 253 km by road from central Tirana on the inland route through Fier, Tepelenë and Gjirokastër, roughly 4 to 4.5 hours of driving. The coastal road via Vlorë and the Riviera is about 280 km and takes longer. The bus route from the South & North terminal is about 262 km.
Is there a train from Tirana to Saranda?
No. Albania's railway doesn't reach the south coast; in 2026 the only passenger service runs between Durrës and Elbasan, and the Tirana–Durrës line is closed for rebuilding. The bus or a car is the only overland way to Saranda.
Where do buses from Tirana stop in Saranda?
At the new Saranda bus terminal at Qafë Gjashtë, on Rruga Skënderbeu at the eastern entrance to town, about 2.2 km from the port. It opened in July 2026; before that buses stopped on Rruga Flamurit in the centre. Buses back to Tirana leave from the terminal too. Tickets are sold online and at the old office on Rruga Onhezmi.
Is there a night bus from Tirana to Saranda?
Yes, a 22:00 departure arrives around 03:00, and a 22:00 runs the other way from Saranda. It saves a daytime travel slot, but a middle-of-the-night arrival is only sensible if you have accommodation already booked and confirmed for a late check-in.
Can I get from Tirana to Saranda without changing buses?
Yes. The listed departures are direct services, no transfer required. They make intermediate stops along the way, but you stay on the same bus from Tirana all the way to Saranda's bus terminal at Qafë Gjashtë. From Durrës or Elbasan there's no direct bus; Gjirafa sells Durrës–Saranda tickets with one change for about 18 to 22 €.
