Gjipe Beach Albania: Trail, Parking, Boat Access & Tips

Gjipe Beach is the most dramatic beach on the Albanian Riviera. Tucked at the mouth of a limestone canyon with towering cliff walls on both sides, pebble-sand shore, and water so clear it glows blue-green from above. It's consistently ranked as Albania's best beach, and it earns it. Here's everything you need to visit.

How to Get There

There are three ways to reach Gjipe Beach. Each has trade-offs.

Option 1: Hike from the Parking Lot (Most Common)

Distance: ~2.5 km from parking to beach (including canyon descent) Time: 30-45 minutes depending on pace Difficulty: Moderate — rocky trail, unshaded, some steep sections

Drive to the Gjipe Beach parking area, 15 km north of Himara (25-minute drive) or 7 km south of Dhermi (12-minute drive). The turnoff from the main road is signed. Parking costs 300 lek (3€) for the day.

From the lot, follow the dirt trail that leads toward the coast. The first section is flat and easy. The last portion descends steeply through rocks to the beach — take your time here, especially in flip-flops (better: wear proper shoes and carry flip-flops for the beach).

What to know:

  • The trail is fully exposed to the sun. In July-August, the midday heat is punishing. Go early or late.
  • The return hike is uphill and feels longer when you're tired and sunburned. Budget extra time.
  • The path is well-worn but not paved. Sturdy sandals or hiking shoes recommended.

Navigate to parking

Option 2: Boat from Himara

Time: ~20 minutes by speedboat Cost: Included in boat tours (~30-60€), or negotiate a water taxi (~15-20€ one way)

The easiest way to reach Gjipe without hiking. Boat tours from Himara include Gjipe as a stop, or you can arrange a boat taxi from Spile Beach. Some tours will drop you off and pick you up later, letting you spend a few hours on the beach.

Best combo: Take a boat one way and hike the other. Boat in (skip the hot downhill), hike out through the canyon (the interesting direction).

Option 3: 4x4 / Jeep from Parking

During summer, local operators at the parking area offer jeep rides down to the beach for a fee (typically 500-1,000 lek per person). This skips the hike entirely but is bumpy and dusty. Available only in peak season when demand is high enough.

What to Expect at the Beach

The Setting

Gjipe is a small cove — maybe 100 meters wide — at the base of a steep canyon. Cliff walls rise on both sides, creating a natural amphitheater. The beach surface is a mix of pebbles and sand (more sand than most Albanian beaches). Looking out, the Ionian Sea stretches to the horizon.

The whole setup feels improbable. You hike through scrubby Mediterranean terrain, descend into a canyon, and suddenly there's this perfect cove with turquoise water.

The Water

Clear, blue-green, and excellent for swimming. The depth increases quickly — within a few meters you're in deep water. At low tide, small caves and rock formations appear at the edges of the canyon walls. These are worth exploring with snorkel gear.

Waves are usually gentle inside the cove, but wind from the northwest can create chop. Morning is typically calmest.

Facilities

Don't expect much:

  • Drinks and snacks — Small huts/vendors sell water, beer, and basic food. Prices are higher than town (you're carrying everything down a trail).
  • Umbrella and lounger rentals — Available in summer. Prices vary.
  • No toilets — Use the camping facilities if they're open, or plan accordingly.
  • No electricity, no WiFi — This is part of the appeal.

Bring everything you'll need: Water (at least 2 liters per person in summer), sunscreen, food if you're picky, and a towel.

The Canyon Trail

The Gjipe Canyon itself is worth exploring beyond the beach. Walking inland from the beach, the canyon narrows, walls rise higher, and the terrain becomes more dramatic.

Distance: ~500 meters inland from the beach Time: 15-20 minutes Difficulty: Easy

Follow the riverbed (usually dry in summer) from the beach inland. The canyon walls tower above you, and the light shifts dramatically. This is doable in beach footwear and gives you the canyon experience without serious climbing.

Full Canyon Hike (Advanced)

Distance: ~1.5 km through the canyon Time: 1.5-2 hours Difficulty: Hard — scrambling over boulders, some climbing required

The full canyon hike goes deeper and involves climbing over large rocks and boulders. This is not a casual walk.

Warning: This trail requires proper footwear and some scrambling experience. Tourists get injured here regularly. Don't attempt it in flip-flops, alone, or without telling someone your plan. In heavy rain, the canyon can flash flood — check weather and avoid after storms.

Vuno to Gjipe Trail

An alternative approach: hike from the hillside village of Vuno down through the canyon to Gjipe Beach. This is the most scenic way to reach the beach — 1-2 hours, moderate difficulty, through Mediterranean scrubland and into the canyon. Start in Vuno and end at the beach for a one-way adventure, then take a boat back to Himara.

Camping at Gjipe

Gjipe is one of the few Albanian beaches where camping is officially allowed.

Gjipe Eco Camping

A small campsite at the beach offers:

  • Tent rental: 30€-40/night (includes sleeping bags, shower access)
  • Bring your own tent: Cheaper, ~10€-15/night for a pitch
  • Facilities: Shared showers, basic toilets
  • No reservations needed (but possible online in peak season)

Wild Camping

People also camp informally on the beach itself, especially at the edges near the cliffs. This is technically tolerated in summer. Bring everything — there's no running water or electricity beyond what the eco-camping provides.

Camping tips:

  • Flash floods: Don't camp in the canyon floor. The riverbed can flood after rain, even distant rain. Stick to the beach and higher ground.
  • Leave before dark or stay the night. The trail out is hard to follow in darkness.
  • Pack trash out. Keep Gjipe clean.

Best Time to Visit

Time Conditions Crowds
Before 10 AM Cool hike, calm water, best light Few people
10 AM - 2 PM Full sun, hot hike, clear water Building crowds
2 PM - 5 PM Peak heat, best swimming Peak crowds
5 PM - sunset Cooling, beautiful light Thinning

Ideal day: Arrive by 9-10 AM. Swim, explore the canyon, have lunch. Leave by 3-4 PM when it's still light enough for a comfortable hike out.

Best months: June and September have warm water, fewer crowds, and gentler heat. July-August is peak — arrive early or you'll share the beach with 100+ people.

What to Bring

Essential:

  • 2+ liters of water per person
  • Sunscreen (reapply after swimming)
  • Proper footwear for the hike (carry flip-flops separately)
  • Cash (all transactions are cash-only)
  • Towel
  • Food/snacks (don't rely on vendors)

Recommended:

  • Snorkel gear (the caves and rocks at the edges are great underwater)
  • Water shoes (useful for pebbly sections)
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Light layer (the canyon shades cool quickly in late afternoon)

Don't bring:

  • Bulky bags (you have to carry everything down and back up)
  • Anything you can't afford to get wet or sandy
  • Glass bottles (pack-in, pack-out principles)

From Himara: Drive north on the coastal road toward Dhermi. The signed turnoff to Gjipe parking is on the left. From the parking, it's 30-45 minutes on foot.

Without a car: Boat tours from Himara include Gjipe as a stop (~30€). Taxi from Himara to the parking lot costs ~1,500-2,000 lek one way.

Combining with Other Stops

  • Gjipe + Jale Beach: 10 minutes apart by car. Hit Gjipe in the morning, Jale's beach clubs in the afternoon.
  • Gjipe + Vuno Village: Hike through the canyon from Vuno, spend the day at Gjipe, boat back to Himara.
  • Gjipe + Dhermi / Drymades: All within 15 minutes of each other. A northern Riviera beach day hitting all three.

Trail Elevation Profile

The hike from parking to beach covers approximately 200 meters of elevation change:

  • Parking lot elevation: ~200m above sea level
  • First 1.5 km: Gradual descent on dirt path through scrubland (~200m → ~100m)
  • Last 1 km: Steeper descent into the canyon (~100m → sea level)
  • Total descent: ~200m over 2.5 km
  • Return: Same 200m climb, allow 40-55 minutes going up

The steepest section is the final descent into the canyon — loose rocks and no shade. Hiking poles are helpful but not essential. The trail is never technical (no scrambling required on the main path).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the hike to Gjipe Beach?

The hike from the parking lot to the beach is about 2.5 km and takes 30-45 minutes. The trail is moderate difficulty — rocky and unshaded. The return is uphill and takes slightly longer. Wear proper shoes, not flip-flops.

Can you drive to Gjipe Beach?

You can drive to the parking lot (300 lek/3€ per day), but not to the beach itself. From parking, it's a 30-45 minute hike. In peak season, 4x4 jeep rides are sometimes available from the lot. Alternatively, take a boat from Himara.

Is Gjipe Beach worth the hike?

Yes. Gjipe is consistently ranked as the best beach in Albania. The canyon setting, water clarity, and sense of adventure make the hike worthwhile. The effort filters out casual visitors, which is why Gjipe feels more special than drive-up beaches.

Can you camp at Gjipe Beach?

Yes. Gjipe Eco Camping offers tent rentals (30€-40/night) and spots for your own tent. Wild camping on the beach is also tolerated in summer. Bring supplies — facilities are very basic.

Is Gjipe Beach safe?

The beach and swimming are safe. The canyon hike beyond the easy first section requires caution — scrambling over boulders, injury risk. Don't hike the full canyon alone or in flip-flops. Avoid the canyon during or after heavy rain due to flash flood risk.
