Gjipe Beach sits roughly 10 km north of Himara by sea, at the mouth of a canyon with 800-plus metres of limestone gorge running inland behind it. There is no coastal road along that stretch. Everything between you and the canyon mouth is cliff, cove and open water, which is what makes the paddle worth doing and also what makes it a route you commit to rather than one you wander up.

Two of those five are real exits. Livadhi has road access and a seasonal boat taxi from Spile. Akuarium has a 1.5 km walking trail up to Livadhi. Crystal sits under a scree slope with no road down to it, and Pigeon's Cave has no landing at all. Past Akuarium, the coast stops offering you a way out that does not involve the sea.

The Wind Window
The single condition that decides this paddle is the northwesterly. Gjipe's canyon mouth faces open water and is directly exposed to NW wind, and the cliffs on either side reflect wave energy back out. That produces uncomfortable chop right against the beach even when the open water looks manageable. A cove that is sheltered in the morning can be the hardest part of the day by mid-afternoon.
On this coast the Tramontana characteristically builds through the day, so afternoon legs run choppier than morning ones. Since the return is a 10 km southbound paddle into whatever has built up, the asymmetry works against you: the outbound leg is the easy half and the one you are tempted to overextend on.
Three conditions that should change the plan rather than be pushed through:
- Whitecaps visible off the Spile headland before you launch. The open sections past Akuarium will be worse than the bay looks.
- Wind rising while you are north of Akuarium. That is the last point with a land exit; beyond it the only way home is the water.
- Surge running against Gjipe's beach. Landing on pebble in cliff-reflected chop is where a good day turns into a damaged boat.

At roughly 92 lek to the euro as of September 2026, an hourly rate is the wrong product for a 20 km round trip. Ask about a day rate before you take an hourly boat out of the bay, and say where you are going. Launching from Livadhi instead of Spile removes the first 4.5 km in each direction, which is the single largest saving available on this route and the reason many paddlers drive the boat up rather than start from town.

What Is Waiting at Gjipe
The landing is pebble and sand at the mouth of the canyon. Small huts sell drinks, umbrellas and loungers are rented, and camping is permitted. That matters here more than at most beaches, because it turns the return leg from a deadline into a choice. Small caves become accessible at low tide, and a path leads inland from the back of the beach into the gorge.
Anyone arriving overland pays 300 ALL (~€3) to park and then walks 30 minutes down. Arriving by water, you pay neither, which is the one clean advantage the kayak has over every other way of getting here.
A Shorter Alternative, and the Motorised Version
If 20 km round trip is more than the day allows, Filikuri Beach lies about 5 km south of Himara and our access record lists kayaking from Spile Beach as a standard way in. It is a secluded pebble cove with good snorkelling over rock formations, a half-length version of the same idea in the opposite direction.
