La cocina de Himara se apoya en el mar Jónico y en la herencia griega de la zona: pescado y marisco fresco a la parrilla y frito, platos de influencia griega como souvlaki, gyros y carnes a la brasa, y básicos albaneses y mediterráneos. A lo largo de la costa también encontrarás muy buena pizza al horno de leña y napolitana, además de pasta italiana. La mayoría de las cartas se montan en torno a lo que se haya pescado esa misma mañana.
Lleva efectivo. Albania funciona en gran medida con el lek (unos 100 ALL por 1 €), y muchas tabernas pequeñas, locales de playa y cafeterías solo aceptan efectivo o lo prefieren, aunque los establecimientos más grandes y de gama alta aceptan tarjeta cada vez más. Hay cajeros en el pueblo de Himara, pero lleva suficiente lek para una comida: los datáfonos pueden quedarse sin conexión cuando se cae la señal.
Sigue siendo una buena relación calidad-precio según los estándares de Europa occidental. Una comida informal en una taberna o de pizza ronda los 8-15 € por persona, mientras que una cena de pescado fresco en un restaurante frente al mar cuesta más: el pescado suele venderse por kilo, así que confirma el peso y el precio antes de pedir. Los viajeros con presupuesto ajustado se las arreglan con unos 30-50 € al día con todo incluido; un café y una pasta cuestan un par de euros.
En la mayoría de las tabernas informales puedes entrar sin más. En julio y agosto los locales más populares frente al mar y los mejor valorados se llenan a las horas punta de la cena, así que conviene reservar con un día de antelación o llegar pronto, antes de las 20:00 aproximadamente. Fuera de temporada alta rara vez hace falta reservar.
La mayor concentración está en el paseo marítimo de Himara y el frente marítimo de Spile, donde tabernas, pizzerías y cafeterías frente al mar se suceden una al lado de otra. También hay locales muy bien valorados en el casco antiguo y repartidos hacia el sur en dirección a Qeparo, por la carretera costera SH8.
