The castle's history
Lëkurësi was built in 1537, under Suleiman the Magnificent, to control the bay of Saranda and the channel to Corfu against Venice, a strategic watchpoint over one of the most contested stretches of the Ionian. It held a garrison of 220, in an almost-square enclosure with a round tower at each of two opposite corners; the southern and eastern walls are the best-preserved stretches, standing up to 7 m and 2 m thick. It's free to walk the grounds; the real draw is the vantage, not the architecture.
The restaurant
Part of the castle has been converted into Restorant Kalaja e Lekuresit, and it's the reason most people come up at dinner rather than just for a photo. The pitch is simple: traditional Albanian grills, pizza and meze with the best view in Saranda, live music on summer evenings, and an outdoor terrace large enough that a late arrival is not automatically turned away. By car or taxi is easiest; it's a short but steep climb up switchbacks behind the town. No taxi rank posts a fare for the hill, and reported prices for the same 3–4 km run from a few hundred lek negotiated out of season to €10–15 quoted to a tourist at sunset, so agree the number before you get in and ask whether the driver will wait.
