The Blue Wave Hotel's pool, sun terrace and lawn from above at sunset, with the Ionian beyond the tree line

A pool, a lawn, and two minutes
down to the water.

The Blue Wave stands just back from the Ionian at Potam, on the Himarë coast — five storeys of cream render around a seasonal outdoor pool, a mown lawn under olives, and a private stretch of beach at the end of the lane.

The pool

The water you swim in first is the one in the garden.

The pool runs seasonally through the summer, set into a paved terrace with loungers, parasols and beanbags along its long side. Tables and chairs sit under the building's own shade at the near end, and the lounge bar beside it serves coffee, cold drinks and a short list through the day.

Beyond the paving the lawn is mown right to the boundary, planted with olive and laurel and lit low along the paths after dark. It is the part of the property the photographs keep coming back to, and it is why the building sits where it does rather than on the sand.

The lattice

Three rooms carry the same triangle wall, in three different colourways.

It is the one thing the building repeats. A lattice of triangles, flanks cut 21° off vertical, printed behind the bed — rose in the sea-front triple, the full spectrum behind a navy velvet headboard, teal over the twin beds. Every joint, corner and marker on this site is cut on the same angle, taken off the walls themselves.

The water

About 116 metres of lane and pine.

Two minutes on foot brings you to the hotel's own stretch of beach, where the sunbeds and umbrellas are free for guests. Everything below is measured in a straight line from the front door; the walk is longer, and pleasanter.

The public sand carrying on to the south is Plazhi i Potamit. Potam is the resort-comfort end of this coast, Spile the walkable one and Livadhi the wide-beach one, which is the choice worth making before you book a beachfront room.
