Albanian Riviera Honeymoon: Romantic 5-Day Plan

The Albanian Riviera is not short of beautiful places for a honeymoon; it is short of empty ones in August. What separates a good week here from a frustrating one is how much privacy you are actually buying. Three things decide it: the size of the property you book, the difficulty of the cove you swim in, and whether your boat is shared with eighteen other people. Below is what each of those costs on this coast, with the properties, coves and operators named.

Privacy by property size

Small is the operative word. Several of the best-rated stays on this coast have single-digit room counts, which does more for a honeymoon than a star rating does.

Three of those deserve specifics. Oniro is the only genuinely adults-only property in the Himara cluster: eight rooms built onto a beach deck at the calm southern end of Potam, with macramé umbrellas, its own loungers and a rooftop bar. Amphora is stone-built inside Himara's fortified Old Town, run by the Kokas family, with a terrace facing the coastline and the quietest after-dark atmosphere in the town. The castle hill has no nightlife on it at all. Miamar carries the one thing this coast is otherwise short of: a full-service spa with hammam, sauna and couples' treatment rooms.

If a pool matters more than a room count, Prado's infinity pool sits above Livadhi Beach, and Dimitri Hotel, an 18-room family-run place at the quiet north end of the same beach, holds a 9.4 Booking score across 560-plus reviews with a seasonal pool and its own loungers on the sand, at 40€–80€.

The coves that stay empty, and the reason each one does

Every quiet beach on this coast is quiet for a mechanical reason. Knowing which reason tells you whether it will still be quiet on the day you go.

• Amallos, about 6.6 km south of Himara in the Porto Palermo bay area, is quiet because the access is rough and there is a short walk down to the cove. Nothing is developed; bring water and shade.
• Palermo Beach, in the same bay, stays calm because it sits inside the sheltered bay and the pebble shore discourages casual visitors. Water shoes required.
• Llamani, 3.5 km south, filters its own crowd: the last stretch of road is steep and the parking is limited, at 200–300 ALL. Deep water from the shore, large stones on the seabed, and a small seasonal beach bar.
• Sasaj, in the Piqeras area, is one of the last undeveloped beaches on the coast and holds quiet through peak summer, precisely because there is nothing there to arrive for: no sunbeds, no bar, no reliable amenities.
• Krorëza has no road access whatsoever. It is reached by a 30–40 minute boat from Saranda or a 5 km coastal hike from Lukovë of one and a half to two hours.
• Filikuri is the most photographed of them and now the least accessible. The clifftop viewpoint walk is fine; the way down to the sand closed during 2025 after two cliff falls, the first fatal, and the overlook is signed against entry with its securing rope gone. Arrive by kayak or SUP from Himara or Potami at around 1,000 ALL an hour, or by private drop-off at roughly €15–25 per person.

Two of those, Amallos and Palermo, are within ten minutes of Porto Palermo Castle, where entry is 300 ALL in Albanian lek cash only, so a morning swim and a fortress walk fit in the same short outing.

Buying the boat rather than a seat on it

Shared half-day departures out of Himara's mini dock are excellent value and are not private. The listed per-person rates are €20 for the Porto Palermo loop, which takes in Filikuri, Llamani, the bay, the castle and the sealed submarine tunnel mouth, and €30 for the Pirate's Cave half-day run by Himara Sea Escapes, which takes in Akuarium, Couples Bay, the cave chain and Gjipe. For a honeymoon the calculation usually favours chartering. Dinner that is worth the drive

The Old Town terrace is the one to take on the first evening. Himara Castle sits on Barbaka hill above the town, is free to wander with no fixed gate hours, holds three Byzantine churches with partial frescoes, and looks out over Livadhi directly below. Corfu is visible on the western horizon, about 70 km out, on clear mornings. It is a fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk up from the promenade, or a short drive to a small free lot near the entrance.

A five-night shape with two bases

Splitting the week north and south removes the repeated drive and changes the character of the trip halfway through. Dhërmi to Himara is 16 km and about 30 minutes.

1. Nights 1–2, Palasë or Dhërmi. The clearest water on the coast, 24–27°C in July and August, and the polished end of the Riviera. Dinner on the Aloni deck.
2. Night 3, transfer to Himara. Stop at Jale on the way down; check in, walk the Old Town, eat on the Kastro terrace at sunset.
3. Night 4, the boat day. Private charter or the €30 half-day, then dinner at Soren or Tramonto.
4. Night 5, south. Porto Palermo Castle at 300 ALL, a swim at Palermo or Amallos, lunch on the bay terrace, back for the last evening.

When to go, and what it saves

June and September are the honest answer for a honeymoon here, for two separate reasons. Prices: shoulder-season sunbed and room rates run meaningfully below the mid-July to late-August peak, and negotiation on a lounger set is possible off-peak in a way it simply is not on an August weekend. Crowds: Jale is quiet on June and September weekdays and a party at peak; Akuarium is overcrowded by about 10:00 in season; Ksamil's beaches fill by roughly 09:00 in July and August. The water stays warm into September, so shoulder season costs you nothing you came for.
