Oasis on the Beach

Potam, Himarë · Albanian Riviera

Under the thatch

The deck, the table and the lawn

Three outdoor rooms, none of them indoors: a reed-roofed deck at the front with the sea in it, a stone patio behind for the tennis table, and a garden of sun loungers under the village.

The front of the hostel is a timber deck under a reed canopy thick enough to keep the sun out entirely, with a rail, a climbing vine and then the shore road. Past the road, pebbles. It is the coolest place on the property between noon and five, which is why nobody leaves it.

The full-size pool table is under the same roof on a stone floor, with pine benches along the open side and a slatted screen at the back. From most of the shots you are looking straight out at the water, which is either an advantage or an excuse.

Behind the building the ground rises. There is a stone patio with a tennis table on it, out of the sun, and beyond that a lawn of wooden pallet loungers on artificial turf, shaded by a fig tree, a stand of yuccas and one green-and-white parasol.

What happens

Booked at the desk, not online

Boat parties and karaoke

The two things Oasis carried down from the town hostel to the beach. Neither runs to a timetable you can read in advance — they turn up on the week they turn up, and the desk knows first.

The bus to Gjipe

A hostel-run bus down the coast to Gjipe, the canyon beach between Dhërmi and Himarë with no road to the sand. It runs on consecutive days through the busy weeks and is booked with the rest of the day trips.

The tours desk

Day trips and boat excursions are arranged at reception rather than online, which is also where to ask about the ones that are not on any list.

Pool, ping-pong and the screen

A full-size table under the reeds with the sea behind it, a tennis table on the stone patio, and live sport on the screen in the lounge when there is any.
