Restaurants in Saranda: Where to Eat, by Reviews (2026)

Restaurants in Saranda are better than the town looks. The town is concrete and scaffolding and its beaches are mediocre, but it has the one thing the resort villages up and down this coast do not: twenty thousand residents who eat out. That means kitchens that survive on returning custom rather than one August of passing trade, dinner served from six in the evening, and prices set for people who live here.

Below are the places with the most weight of opinion behind them, with Google ratings and review counts as of September 2026 so you can judge how much consensus is actually behind each score.

The best restaurants in Saranda, by weight of review

Restaurant Rating Reviews
Haxhi 4.9 9,570
Taverna Joan 4.8 3,555
Don Peppe Pizzeria Napoletana 4.8 3,050
Sophra Restaurant 4.7 2,914
Taverna Beni Peshkatari 4.6 1,602
Marini 4.8 1,439
Vela Marine Restaurant 4.5 1,354
Taste of Tradition 4.8 1,254
Finest Grill Saranda 4.8 1,161
Restaurant Isufi 4.8 1,138
Taverna Rrapo 4.6 1,101
Hera Restaurant 4.8 1,043
Fishbar Saranda 4.8 846

Haxhi is the standout, 4.9 from over nine and a half thousand reviews, which is an extraordinary level of agreement and the closest thing Saranda has to a consensus pick. If you only book once, book there.

Note how many of these are taverna rather than restaurant: Joan, Beni Peshkatari, Rrapo. That is the town's character. Beni Peshkatari translates roughly as "Beni the fisherman", which tells you what to order.

Treat the numbers as a guide, not a ranking. High-volume ratings on a port town reward reliability; some of the best meals here are at places with three hundred reviews and no English menu.

What makes Saranda different

Three things, and they compound:

The town eats here too. Walk two streets back from the promenade and the clientele changes. Those kitchens cannot survive on tourists alone and it shows in both the cooking and the bill.

Butrint mussels. Farmed in the lagoon between Saranda and Butrint and served all over town. They are the single most local thing on any menu here and they are at their best as the water cools from September onward.

The fish is genuinely local. This is a working port. Ask what came in that morning rather than reading down the menu.

What dinner costs

Roughly €15-25 per person for a seafood dinner with wine, which is consistent across the town and noticeably below Ksamil, where the beachfront carries a real markup.

Promenade tables cost more than back streets for the same food. A full day in Saranda, sunbeds, lunch, a boat seat and dinner with wine, comes in comfortably under €60 a head, which is the town's whole economic argument.

What to order

  • Butrint mussels, ideally where you can see the lagoon.
  • Whatever came in that morning, grilled whole with lemon and oil.
  • Qofte and grilled meats, which the finest grill end of the list does well and cheaply.
  • Byrek from a bakery for breakfast, not from a restaurant.
  • Raki afterwards. It will arrive whether or not you order it.

Our Albanian food regional guide and fish vocabulary guide are worth ten minutes before your first dinner.

Timing, and the xhiro

Saranda's evening runs on the xhiro. The promenade stroll that fills the waterfront from about 20:00. The practical consequence: eat at 18:30 or after 21:00. In between, everyone is walking, and the promenade restaurants are at their busiest.

Eating early is entirely normal here and it gets you the table you want. In July and August, book anything on the front.

Where to eat, by situation

If you want Go
The consensus pick Haxhi
A proper fish taverna Taverna Beni Peshkatari, Taverna Joan
Pizza that is actually Neapolitan Don Peppe
Mussels at the source The lagoon road toward Butrint
Cheap and quick The grills in the back streets
A view over the bay The promenade, pay for it knowingly
Sunset with the meal Lëkurësi Castle terrace, above town

Practical notes

  • Cash and card. Larger places take cards; smaller tavernas often do not. Draw lek in town.
  • Fish is priced by weight. Confirm the per-kilo price and the weight before it is cooked. Standard practice, and it prevents the one bill dispute that recurs on this coast.
  • Book in peak season, especially anything on the promenade in the Ferragosto fortnight around 15 August.
  • Off-season is fine here. Unlike Ksamil, Saranda is a working town, restaurants stay open through the year, which is one reason September and October work so well.
  • The hill. Saranda climbs steeply from the water. A restaurant four blocks up is four blocks up on the way home.

FAQ

Where is the best restaurant in Saranda?

Haxhi, by weight of opinion, 4.9 from over 9,500 Google reviews, far more consensus than anywhere else in town. Taverna Joan, Don Peppe and Sophra all sit at 4.7-4.8 with around 3,000 reviews each.

How much does dinner cost in Saranda?

Roughly €15-25 per person for a seafood dinner with wine, less in the back streets and more for a promenade table. That is meaningfully cheaper than Ksamil, where beachfront restaurants carry a bigger markup.

What should I eat in Saranda?

Butrint mussels, farmed in the lagoon just south of town and best from September as the water cools, and whatever fish came in that morning. This is a working port. The grills do qofte and meat well and cheaply, and raki arrives after dinner whether you ask or not.

What time do restaurants open in Saranda?

From around 18:00, which is earlier than much of southern Europe. Eat at 18:30 or after 21:00, in between, the promenade fills with the evening xhiro and the waterfront restaurants are at their busiest.

Are Saranda restaurants open in winter?

Many are. Saranda is a real town of about 22,000 people rather than a seasonal resort, so kitchens serve residents year-round, unlike Ksamil, where much of the strip shuts outside the season.

The bottom line

Saranda's food is the best argument for basing here rather than on a prettier beach. Book Haxhi once, eat mussels at least twice, walk two streets back from the promenade for everything else, and eat at half six before the xhiro takes the waterfront. Confirm the price per kilo on any whole fish, and carry cash for the tavernas.
