The terrace

Timber, cloth, and the noise of the road.

The tables sit under beams at the back and a brown scalloped awning at the front, on flagstone behind and painted boards at the road. In daylight they are laid with the same red-and-cream check, and the cruets are out before anything is ordered.

It is not a quiet room. It is a shore road in southern Albania, and the terrace is on it.

Under the beams, the middle of the day

The kitchen

Mediterranean, with the sea in it.

Shellfish raw and dressed, prawns sent out in a glass, and on the card a cold sea-fruit salad, a shrimp risotto, a seafood risotto and a fish soup. The house publishes the card in full on its own site.

Where it stands

Himarë, but not the middle of it.

The house stands on Rruga Vangjel Zoto, about 700 metres south-east of the centre in a straight line. That is the point of it: the shingle and the water are a few steps from the table, and the shops and the port are a short run back along the coast.
