Fittings

Wood above, wood below, whitewash between

The rooms are the original rooms of a hillside house: tongue-and-groove ceilings, board floors, arched doorways cut through to the bathrooms, and a lamp on a cord in the middle of each. The bunks are white-painted timber, the lockers are numbered to the bed, and the air-conditioning unit is on the wall where you would want it.

None of it is new and none of it pretends to be. What it is, is a room with a door at the end that opens onto a balcony over the bay, which is not a thing most dormitories have.

A dormitory corner with a round dark table and two chairs beside the bunk beds, a coffee cup and a plate of sliced fruit on the table
A table and two chairs at the end of the bunks, which is where most of the morning happens.
An open casement window above a balcony rail, looking out over blue water to a wooded hillside, with a small table and chair inside the room
A window opened onto the water. The rail beyond it is the balcony that runs along that side.

The same room looking the other way — the door at the end is the balcony.
