The pool terrace at dusk: a crescent moon in a pale evening sky, a pink afterglow along the sea, an island low on the horizon, fan palms and black sun canopies over the loungers

Golden View Residence · DhërmiThe sea, from 220 metres up.

On the hill above Dhërmi the pool ends at a white rail, and past the rail there is nothing but the Ionian.

A small hotel on the slope, 1.8 km by road from the village and ten minutes' drive from the beach. Most of what a stay here is about happens on the terrace: the loungers along the seaward edge, the pool bar, breakfast by the window, and the light going down over the water.

The orientation table

What lies out there, bearing by bearing.

Mountain viewpoints keep a bronze table that names the peaks around them. This is the same idea for a hillside over the sea: every ray points at a real place, at its true bearing from the hotel, longer the farther it lies.

Due west, 99 km across the strait, is the heel of Italy.
