Dhërmi, Albanian Riviera

A family hotel above Dhërmi Beach

A covered terrace table at Augustus Hotel with a bottle of white wine in an ice bucket and two glasses, looking down over tiled roofs to Dhërmi Beach, the headland and the open sea

Every room opens on to a terrace, the bar mixes the cocktails guests come back for, and Dhërmi Beach is about 300 metres down the hill. The family has run it since June 2015.

The front of Augustus Hotel from the road: a blue-grey three-storey building above a dressed-stone wall, a green gate under a red bougainvillea, and a white sign bearing a claret lion-in-laurel crest and the words Augustus Hotel

The gate, the bougainvillea and the crest.

Under the lion and the laurel

The crest on the gate, a lion's head in a laurel wreath, is the family's own, and it is on the reception desk too, under a painting of a chariot at full gallop. Prints of classical statues hang above the beds. The name is an emperor's; the hotel is a small three-star on the road down to the sea.

What guests remember is the welcome: the people at the desk who know their name by the second morning, and the many who come back the next summer.

The reception at Augustus Hotel: a white desk printed with the claret lion-in-laurel crest, a framed painting of a chariot battle above it, and photographs of the coast pinned to a grey wall

A day at Augustus

Down to the sea, and back up for the view

  1. A long wooden table with white chairs in the dappled shade of an olive tree in the garden at Augustus Hotel

    Morning

    Breakfast, then the walk down

Breakfast is a buffet. Dhërmi Beach is about 300 metres below the gate, a few minutes on foot down the hill, with the restaurants and beach bars of the strip along the sand.

  2. Two padded loungers and a small table with a bottle of wine on a tiled roof terrace, a potted tree at the parapet and the sea along the horizon

    Afternoon

Back up, out of the noise

The walk back is the steep part. The reward is height: the hotel stands above the waterfront, so the terraces look over the roofs to the whole bay rather than at the next building.

  3. Two pink cocktails in coupe glasses and a decorative bottle on a table on the courtyard terrace at dusk, with cypresses and the stone steps behind

    Evening

    The bar and the terrace

The hotel keeps its own bar, and the cocktails are what guests come back to mention. Take them out on the terrace while the light goes off the headland.

Questions

Asked before booking

How far is Augustus Hotel from the beach in Dhërmi?

Dhërmi Beach is about 300 metres from the hotel, a few minutes' walk down the hill. The way back up is steep, which is the price of the view: the hotel sits above the waterfront strip, so its terraces look over the roofs to the whole of Dhërmi Bay.

Is there parking at Augustus Hotel?

Yes. Private parking at the hotel is free and needs no reservation, and there is accessible parking beside the building. Guests driving the coast can leave the car at the gate and walk down to Dhërmi Beach, about 300 metres below, rather than looking for a space by the sand.

Do the rooms at Augustus Hotel have a balcony or terrace?

Yes. Every room opens on to its own terrace, and each is air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, a seating area, a flat-screen TV and a fridge. Many look out over the bay to the sea; the hotel also has one suite with a large terrace facing the water.

Is breakfast served at Augustus Hotel?

Yes. Breakfast is a buffet, and guests rate it highly. The hotel also has its own bar, known among guests for its cocktails, and a snack bar, with a garden and terraces to take them out to. For lunch and dinner the restaurants of the beach strip are a short walk down.

What are the check-in and check-out times at Augustus Hotel?

Check-in runs from 14:30 to 22:30 and check-out from 07:00 to 11:00. Guests checking in must be at least 18. Payment at the hotel is in cash, so bring enough for the stay and the bar. Reception speaks Albanian, Greek, English and Italian.

Can I bring children or pets to Augustus Hotel?

Children of all ages are welcome, and a cot for a child up to three years old is free on request, subject to availability. There are family rooms with a double bed and a bunk. Extra beds are not available, and pets are not allowed.

Does Augustus Hotel have a swimming pool?

No. There is no pool and no spa. The hotel is a small family-run three-star with a bar, a garden, terraces and a roof terrace with loungers, and the sea is a few minutes' walk below at Dhërmi Beach, with Drymades and Gjipe further along the coast.

How do I get to Augustus Hotel in Dhërmi?

Dhërmi is on the SH8 coast road between Vlorë and Himarë. From Vlorë the road runs south over the Llogara Pass or through the Llogara Tunnel and down to the coast. The hotel stands beside the road that leaves the SH8 for Dhërmi Beach, about 300 metres above the sand, with free parking at the gate.
