Rruga Zaho Koka 57 · Himarë · Albania

Rooms, a lawn and a hand-painted sign

A small hotel on a quiet street in Himarë, a few minutes above the pebbles at Prinos. Rooms with a balcony of their own, a garden with thatched parasols to sit under, and free parking on the property.

The house

Awnings down four floors on Rruga Zaho Koka

The building is easy to pick out: ochre render, a pantile roof, and a cream drop-awning over every balcony below the top floor. Behind it the hillside climbs into olive terraces; in front, the street runs down towards the water.

It is family-run rather than a resort: a garden to sit in, breakfast in the morning, an attentive host, and rooms kept non-smoking, with air conditioning through August.

Where the afternoon goes

A lawn between the building and the wall, with thatched parasols, timber director's chairs and a table under each one. Hydrangeas and geraniums along the border, a stone wall at the back, and the yellow board with the hotel's name on it on the garden wall.

The shore

Down the hill to the pebbles

Prinos Beach is the nearest water — a few minutes on foot, light pebbles, and a cold, clear sea fed by springs off the Himarë mountains. Part of it runs as a beach club with sunbeds; the rest is open shore.

Potami Beach is the next bay south, quieter than the town beaches and lined with places to eat. Spile, the beach in the middle of Himarë, is further up the coast road.

The balconies here look at the olive grove and the hillside rather than the sea. It is a short walk that buys the quiet.
