Souvlaki, gyros and skewers off the grill

A grill counter and a street terrace: blue tables, rush chairs, and a plane tree growing up through the pergola. Gyros goes out in our own printed paper; skewers come on a plate.

What it is

A counter, a pergola, a plane tree

We are on Rruga 2 Dhjetori, the part-pedestrian street that runs through Spile between the front and the coast road. The grill is at the back under a board; the tables are out on the pavement under a white pergola, blue-painted with bare wood tops and white and blue chairs around them.

It is a short menu done the same way every time — meat off the grill, into pita or onto a plate, with chips and tzatziki. Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google.

The paper

It leaves the counter wrapped

Gyros goes into the pita with the chips already inside, then into paper printed with our own name — and from there it is yours to carry to a table. Or not to a table: a wrap eaten on the sea wall is the everyday Himarë lunch.

The terrace

Blue tables on the pavement

The seating is out on the street under the pergola. Bare varnished tops, rush seats, and the plane tree coming up through the roof.

Getting here

On the street, not the highway

The SH8 coast road passes about 140 metres inland. Spile itself is walked rather than driven, so leave the car on the main road and come in on foot. The same walk takes in the beach and most of the other kitchens in town.
